2012 and what's going on.

Picture
Well, it's still happening. If you would like a paddle with company then Wednesday Evenings down at Langland Bay from 6pm onwards is the place to be. Get the chance to say hello to fellow SUPer's try lots of new kit and see what we can learn from each other. Typically everyone congregates in the bay and then depending on wind direction we will travel either up or down the coast at whatever speed people fancy. Don't worry if you get left behind, you'll get picked up on the way back. And afterwards a quick drink in Langlands Brasserie .

May 4th and in future

Hi Everyone

Couple of things - seeing as I nearly always say - lets meet down Langland between 6.30 - 7.00 it's obviously easier to say -its always down Langland unless there is something exciting happening elsewhere in which case i will send you a text.. easy.

And - As it happens tonight there is an Easterly chop - so lets skip it this week..

Wednesday 27th April

Clearly everyone needs to be in training for the Paddle Surf Festival in May!! So Langland looks like it will be nice for a cruise up to the lighthouse and back.

Wednesday 20th April

It's sunny, it's warm and the water is very flat, so come on down and have a splash in Langland Bay. Loads of new boards to have a play on and stuff to try. If you have a mate who wants a go - bring him / her on down I am sure we can sort something out.
See you later, cheers jim

Wednesday 13th April - Booh

It's rainy choppy and windy - that's no fun. Let's skip a week.. See you next week when it will 3-4 ft and glassy.. Hoorahhh

Wednesday 6th April 2011

It might be nice with a few waves – see you down Caswell as soon as you can get there, before the tide gets too high..6.30 ish

See you later

It's Back!! Spring 2011

Picture
The Light evenings are here and Gower SUP is off again! I know there have been loads of awesome pics taken over the winter - Send them in and you will be immortalised online - Whooo Hooo - probably easiest send to jim.richardson2211@yahoo.co.uk
Anyone up for it - Tonight Wednesday 30th March - lets have a look at Caswell and see if we can catch a choppy wave or too. The more you fall off the stronger you become!..
Hope to see you later
Cheers
Jim

Fancy a Festive Pint?

Picture
Anyone up for a quick Christmas Egg nogg? Well how about popping along for a swift pint at The Newton Inn, Newton, Mumbles on Thursday 23rd December from about 8pm onwards. There should be a good crowd and Peter's wife Mel will be singing and so long as you can avoid any duets - It should be cool.

Winter Radness

So what will happen during these wintry months when it's too dark to get in the water after work? Well, we haven't got a huge schedule sorted out - but we will do the occaisional paddle up the Tawe and if the conditions look great on the weekend we will post plans and ideas for coastal cruises or surf sessions.
If anyone would like to advertise kit for sale, looking for a lift to a race or any other stuff text me on 07834 775863. Cheers Jim
Incidentally check out picture above - this is Adrian Jones getting majorly rad at the BSUPA Watergate Contest. Whhoo Hoooo!

Wednesday 27th October

There be a big thumping swell out there me harties and a stiff sea breeze. If I wasn't stuck in work I would be having a go, but alas it's not to be. If you can get in - have fun, play safe.

Wednesday 20th October

Not very much light but there is a high tide, sunny spells and an offshore wind making the water lovely and flat. If you can make it down to Langland after work, come along for a paddle about, Either in the Bay or round to Caswell / Pwll Ddu..

Wednesday 6th October

It's high tide, windy and lumpy - so we will give it a miss for a week. A few adventurous souls may be having a play in Swansea Bay, possibly a high tide surf in langland and rumour has it that Broughton will be good, but for most by the time we get there it will be dark. Tawe River sessions starting soon..Who is up for Watergate next week - it's going to be great..

Wednesday 29th September

There's a wave but by the time work is over it will be getting high and probably crowded on the reef in Langland so lets give Caswell a look, anyway we only have about ten minutes anyway before it gets dark.

Wednesday 22nd September

Well there are waves - PJ says it is 3-4 ft and pumping so let's give it a blast at Llangennith - with so little daylight - get there when you can! If you are looking for a little more shelter Rhossilli might be slightly more sheltered, but we can only choose one and today it's Llangennith.
For a flat water paddle, Langland at the moment looks ok 2.30pm but the wind is due to pick up.
See you soon..

Watergate Bay Contest October 16th / 17th

Picture
This was a fantastic competition last year and 2010 looks like its going to be even bigger and better. There will be a Mens and Womens Surf Comp, a distance race and an expression session so we should be driving back up the M5 and M4 with tons of trophies and stuff. If you have ever wondered what a surf competition is like come and give it a blast!  Have a butchers  http://standuppaddlesurf.co.uk/component/content/article/1-latest-news/196-extreme-academybuspa-2010-series-finals

Wednesday 15th Sept

Afternoon all, we have had a few IT issues so apologies for the delay in stating the obvious - conditions are challenging, there are waves with a short wave interval and a howling wind. So we are heading to langland with low expectations - it might be worth taking a different wave tool.. longboard, shortboard, body board or simply just a dashing pair of trunks.

Club Sessions

Our aim as a club is to increase participation in the sport of stand up paddle surfing in the Swansea / Gower area. We also want to push boundaries in all aspects of the sport from cruising and fishing to surfing and racing. To help facilitate this, weekly club sessions (depending on conditions),  will be held on a Wednesday night at 7 pm on Langland or Caswell Bay. Hopefully these sessions will allow everyone to get out on the water, whether for fun, training or to improve your surfing or paddling technique.

Each session will be structured around the prevailing conditions and aimed at improving us as paddlers, as well as having fun and progressing the sport of stand up paddle surfing at the same time.

Wednesday September 8th

Its a big high tide, the wind is Westerly and after a very very exciting weekend - inspiration is in short supply - so Langland looks like the obvious choice. There are a few of us working away today, so if you can make it, please paddle safely and keep an eye out for each other.
Well played everyone this weekend - you were great ! Hoorahhh. If we had a club house I would put all of the pictures up!!

Race Results!

Hi All,

The start of Saturday 4th September did not seem too promising, grey skies, a strong onshore wind and muddy brown waves were stretching a long way out to sea. Magic Seaweed and Wind Guru were telling us one thing and Mother Nature another. The original plan of a triangular course was quickly shelved and replaced by a simpler there and back course, the four laps we had envisaged reduced to three. As the competitors arrived on the beach the question on the whole seemed to be - do we really have to go out in that ? Whenever the conditions improved slightly, this would be swiftly followed by a rapid deterioration and the power kite riders further down the bay clearly demonstrated the conditions were good for water sport, but apparently the sport wasn't SUP.
At 1.00pm we decided the race should go ahead. With no less than three rescue boats on the water and a restricted course the wind and current still threatened to cause problems however as the racers lined up on the gritty shores of Swansea Bay, the wind abated for a moment and the race was on.
With the combination of flags, boards and rashvests the race attracted a large group of people to the waters edge and an enthusiastic crowd cheered the racers on and the fun paddlers home.  The mens fun race was won by John Roberts on his trusty Jimmy Lewis, followed by Adrian Jones on his C4 and then Richard Downs on a McTavish.
The ladies event a fiercely contested affair won by Abbie Elkinwood riding a Drops followed by Mi Richardson and Kath Jones on Gerry Lopez.
The unlimited class was somewhat under represented not least due to the adverse conditions but a heroic, 1st 2nd and 3rd place was taken by Llanelli's finest Ian Dogman Richards.
The main event was a close fought contest, with Mark Slater taking an early lead from Richard Morton on the first lap and the gap gradually shrank as the race progressed. The choppy conditions heightened the tension and all racers fell in more than once allowing their chasers to gain ground and make up positions. As it happens most people fell off just about the same amount and as such the positions remained as they had been at the end of the first lap. Mark Slater came in first followed by Richard and closely followed by Charlie Gray.
The race took less than 30 minutes, but in that short space of time it certainly demonstrated that new formats make for interesting racing. In this event paddle technique, surfing ability, strength and stamina all played a vital part. From a spectators perspective the race was excellent, with lots of action with plenty going on close to shore. From the competitors stand point there was more to consider, difficult water conditions, gusting wind, waves, getting on, off and falling, negotiating other paddlers, pivot turning at the bouys and still looking good in front of the crowd.

All in all a well rounded paddle challenge and worthy of the title "Battle of The Paddle".

Finally well done to everyone who entered and particularly well done to the members of the Gower Stand Up Paddle Club who came raced and gave it your all. well done everyone !!

The Gower Battle of The Paddle has establised it's format and next year we will be back, bigger better faster.. Bring it On!

Event Details

Hi All

I thought I should offer a little explanation regarding what to expect for the weekend.

Saturday 4th September : Gower Battle of the Paddle. In association with Bae Fest http://www.baefest.com the Gower Paddle Surf Club will be hosting a “battle of the paddle” style race event. Those not familiar with the format, the race will be run from the beach around a triangular course returning to the beach, through a gate and back out for your next lap. It is planned that the 12-6 and Unlimited class will complete 4 laps of the course. The Fun Paddlers will start shortly after the main race and will complete as many laps of the course as they care to do. All lap times will be taken, so all competitors will know their fastest lap and be able to compare them selves with the big boys and think – with a longer board and a bit more training – I could be a contender.
Anyone who attended this event last year should be able to tell you, there will be loads going on from beach volleyball, hip hop and belly dancing, a skate park and loads of cool things to eat.
Monster Energy Drink have kindly supplied a huge quantity of samples, so all competitors should be wide awake and raring to go.

Sunday 5th September, Gower Paddle Surf Club -Surf Event. The plan on Sunday is to arrange a surf session down at Llangennith Beach - one of Wales’s most stunning scenic beaches and arrange a fun introduction session into competitive SUP Surfing. Conditions permitting we will run heats throughout the day aiming to give all paddlers the opportunity to learn the excitement and frustration of a 20 minute surf heat in a friendly no pressure environment. If possible we will run a repercharge giving all paddlers the chance to don the vest more than once. There may be winners and a podium but most importantly everyone will experience a competition format.

More details to follow ….

September 1st 2010

Picture
Well the wind is Easterly but by the evening it shoud have all gone, leaving lovely smooth water (hopefully). I can't pretend I don't think it might be quite nice down Llangennith, but with the contest this weekend, Langland is the obvious choice for getting together and talking through stuff. And there might be a little wave too. All attendees please come along armed with your date of birth and email address for us to add you to our insurance. I am pleased to confirm a huge quantity of Monster Energy Drink has arrived - so no sleep for a week!! See you later.

Two on the Podium at the BSA British Surfing Championships

Picture
Just thought I might mention the 2010 BSA British SUP Championship were run in windy, choppy Fistral on the August Bank Holiday weekend and were won for the second year running by none other than our very own Chris Guts Griffiths. Also on the podium and knocking out a few big names in the process - Jim Richardson took third place. Whoo Hooo..and I am relaibly informed he is pretty chuffed about this.

Gower SUP Club Battle of The Paddle Race and Surf Contest.
4/5th September 2010

Picture
The Gower SUP club in association with Bae Fest www.baefest.com will be holding a Battle of the Paddle Surf and Race Competition on the first weekend of September 2010. So get practising !

There will be two races running concurrently, one for the racing snakes with race boards and another for fun paddlers who would like to enjoy the heady thrill of a SUP race but don't want to be measured against anyone except themselves. The race class will complete four laps of a designated course and the fun paddlers 2.

The course will be triangular in shape giving you chance to demonstrate your prowess in all directions of wind. Starting from the beach you will race out around the first buoy across to the second and back to the beach. Once your board is out of the water or in the drop off (Shallow water area) you will run or jog up the beach, through the gate and then return to your board and out for lap two.

All laps will be timed so if you are only doing one then you will still be able to se how you would have faired against the racing elite.. There will be an official list of rules closer to the event but this is the gist of it.

There will be hand made trophies for the winners of the categories but most important there will be the glory and the public adoration.

More to follow.

Wednesday 25th August - Doh

There's a big high tide, a nasty bit of weather with a gusty easterly.. Perhaps a hot chocolate in Langlands Brasserie is the order of the day. If the weather breaks we can have a pootle in the bay.

Incidentally - we are sorting out club insurance. If you attend the club paddles please text me your name date of birth and email address cheers Jim 07834 775 863

Wednesday 18th August

It's looking windy, the tide is out and there is teeny surf with a very short wave period. What a shame. Lets have a look at Langland at 7 - meet behind the Brasserie and wonder whether we shall fight our way down the beach. But as they say any paddling is better than none and the fresh air will do us good, and what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
And - what if the conditions are just like this for the race in September, how we will kick ourselves when we realise we should have been out practicing. Maybe.

Wednesday 11th August

Picture
The Wind is freshening up, there's not much surf and it's going to be sunny. So lets play in Langland Bay and have a pint of shandy afterwards.. what fun. See you later.

Wednesday 4th August

There is a fair bit of wind around tonight, but low tide at Langland may give us a small wave on the reef to play on. See you all Later

Wednesday 28th July

Its a bit windy and the surf is a bit small, so lets meet for a bit of a paddle and enjoy the high tide.

Wednesday 21st July

I'd love to say it's gonna be great, but with only a small swell and a Southerly wind its not looking great, but hopefully as the wind swings South Westerly later we might find something to play on.
So last minute change taking into accountthe conditions - which are - very little waves - lets do Langland instead and pat the seal on the head

Wednesday 14th July

Picture
The conditions are against us, there's a swell, high ish tide and a South Easterly wind. Ewwww.  But like the dog, i'm not convinced it's going to be worth it.

3.30pm update : All things considered, i think we should skip the club paddle this evening. Magic Seaweed and Wind Guru are both predicting, nasty uncomfortable conditions, so rather than struggle lets say - see you next week.

Custard Point Night Surf : Glory for the Gower!

First Up the Custard Point Night Surf
If you wonder what Night Surfing is like - go surfing with your wetsuit hood on backwards and then occaisionally stare directly into the sun. It's unbelievably tricky but as Tim mellors said "it's the same for everyone."
Four of us went down to Newquay, Chris (Guts) and Connor Griffiths, me (Jim) and Rich Morton. Conditions were 2 - 3 ft and very choppy adding to the difficulty. There were 16 entrants all together and all heats contained at least two seasoned competitors. Conor and Rich surfed well but didn't manage to get through the heats, I managed to pinch 2nd place in my heat (knocking out Jon Hibbard no less - hoorahh!) and Guts surfed well and made his way through to the semis too.
The semi's were surfed in very dark conditions, it was very difficult to see the approaching waves, so all take off were very late and it was only once you were on a wave did you have any idea whether it was any good or not. Luck was against me in my semi, I had sat happily in second place behind Elliot Dudley for much of the heat but then  went out after missing the last set of the heat as Alex Murray and Adam Zervas picked up good rides and bumped me out of the contest. Gutted! Chris once again surfed well and made his way to the final.
In the final, Chris Griffiths, Tim Mellors, Elliot Dudley and Alex Murray all faced a very tricky 3-4 ft choppy, sloppy Fistral Bay with a long and difficult paddle out. Alex Murray made the contest very difficult for himself by taking a wave straight through to the beach and then having a nighmare trying  to get back out.  Tim Mellors struggled to catch any decent waves which left the contest to be fought out between Guts and Elliot. Both surfed well in very challenging waves but Guts managed to pick the better of the set waves, he took a few chances, went big on some moves and took the win! Whoo Hooo! - Team Gower.
All in all it was an excellent contest despite the waves and I would very strongly recommend it to everyone for next year.

Wednesday 7th July

Last minute change of plan - its pretty horrid out there - lets do Langland - at least its a bit sheltered..

Funny old conditions today, but the wind is dropping and there's a small wave so it's looking like Caswell to get rad on those new short SUP's that everyone has been buying eh?
Check later for a last minute change of plan but all things considered I reckon its the best bet. And anyone who surfed at the Custard Point Night Surf can confirm, sometimes you need to practice in very wobbly conditions.
See you later!

Wednesday 30th June

There's not much waves, there's not much wind, the tide is in so Caswell will be Lifeguard soup so lets get on down to Langland and say hello to the enthusiastic seal who has been bobbing about in the bay.
See you all at 7ish for a paddle and play.
I have heard there might be a few paddle newbies coming along for a first time, so if you have any mates who are busting to have a go, then bring them on down, and if you have any spare kit, boards etc it will be much appreciated. If anyone has a camera -its about time our flotilla was photographed
it would be great if you record the fun.

Stand Up Paddle Surf Coaching Session with the British Champion Chris 'Guts' Griffiths.
Wednesday 23rd June,7 pm Caswell Bay

Picture
Chris 'Guts' Griffths is the current British stand up paddle surf champion, local legend and all around nice guy and he has agreed to give us a paddle surf coaching session tomorrow night on Caswell bay (fingers crossed the small forecast swell will materialise!!). If you are a beginner looking to catch your first wave or trying to nail that roundhouse cut back, this is a great chance to pick up some tips and ask those burning technique question! See you all tomorrow.

Wednesday 16th June - Meet Langland.

Picture
Its a lovely day, very light winds and an incoming tide. lets meet behind Langlands Brasserie and paddle about, probably towards Caswell but before we commit and see everyone blown out to sea again, we'll have a look on the water. There has been a lot of excitement about paddle surf fishing, who will be the first to have a confirmed bass catch? We have a huge prize in the form of a sticker for the first fish caught at a club meet. see you later angling fans..

Wednesday 9th June - Llangennith

After agonising consideration
Langland to high for waves and then the reef will be rammed..
Caswell too high and full of lifeguards until 8.30 ish
Swansea Bay not high enough for a paddle

It seems the only sensible option is Llangennith. There should be a wave all day and a light offshore wind at the end of the day. lets try to meet at the Hillend carpark at 7.30 ish. I appreciate this is a change from the norm but it's one of those tricky to choose because of the conditions days.
Anyone looking for a gentle paddle, I think Langland and there abouts should be pleasant enough  - but for a bit of rad action, its the big long beach at the end of the Gower.
I hope to see you there!

Gul Night Surf - Custard Point Stand Up Paddle Surf Contest June 18th Fistral Beach Newquay

This will certainly be one of the biggest paddle surf competitions of the year so a perfect opportunity to pit your skills against the UK's finest and bring the silverware home to Gower.
There's a few of us going down, so if you are interested either let me know on Wednesday or give me a bell cheers Jim 07834 775 863.

Wednesday 2nd June

Conditions looking good for a chilled out Surf Session down at Caswell Bay. Small but beautifully formed waves are crying out for a paddle surfing, nose riding extraveganza.
Eyeball report from this morning - looking lovely. Lets play in the bay and the adventurous can sneak round the corner to see if we can catch a wave on the boiler, or Madman's reef or Pwll Ddu Head or simply play in the sun in the bay.

Its Race Time ! This Friday 28th May on Swansea Bay!!

Picture
Belated results
1st Richard Morton riding the Starboard PIN 12 6
2nd Chris Griffiths riding Surftech Coast Runner 14ft
3rd Iab Dogman on the Starboard Point

What could be more fun - a fun paddle board race across Swansea Bay. Don't be put off by the race title - this (like most paddle board races) is a fun event and it's the taking part that counts. A sunny Bank Holiday Evening down at Verdi's should mean there's a good crowd to watch the start and for the finishers a beer and a burger courtesy of Matt and everyone at SUP Gower.

Wednesday 26th May -Update - Let's do Langland

Picture
Lets meet at 7pm down at Langland behind the Brasserie. (Caswell will be crowded at high tide.)
See you later!

We are getting pretty jammy here, once again the weather is being kind and the wind is due to drop for a pleasant evening paddle. We hear lots of board purchases have been going on over the last few weeks so there should be loads of new craft on the water. The waves, having blessed us all weekend have disappeared so we will be taking a distance paddle and then get some racing training in coached by Richard Morton, this years man to beat on the race circuit. We will be going to the BSUPA race in Launceston on Saturday so if you fancy coming along, let us know.

Wednesday 19th May

Surf report 8.15 - surf looked 2-3 ft and clean. The wind is meant to be dropping for this evening so it should be great and with the tide mainly out a big wide beach to play on. It looks like the surf session switch is in the on position!

Conditions are looking great for a cracking paddle and surf down at Caswell Bay this Wednesday. There are rumours of a fun surf contest where everyone (who wants to) can experience the joy and frustration of participating in a surf competition. I can confirm that if the contest runs there will be a small insignificant prize, but the glory and the respect will be more than money can buy!
Who will be Gower Paddle Surf Club, wednesday night champ ? its going to be fierce! See you there!

Its a Win For Gower Paddle Surf Club at the West Wittering BSUPA Race!!

Its a win for Gower Paddle Surf Club with Richard Morton on his Starboard PIN taking first place in the West Wittering BSUPA paddle surf race 2010.  The start of the race was held in choppy, challenging conditions resulting in a number of competitors falling in and then as the route turned Northwards it was paddled upstream, with the tide and a following light wind. Richard made the competition hard for himself early on, choosing a dodgy mid channel route and in doing so creating a substantial gap between him and the early leader, last years champion Jock Patterson. As the race progressed, Richard's pre season, night time training on the Tawe paid off as he gradually mile by mile wound Jock in. Richard passed Jock at approximately the 7km mark and then the race had un unexpected change of events when Jock's paddle snapped before he could regroup and stage a come back. With Jock out of the race and the remaining field a fair way behind, Richard was free to push on through to take the Gold! Our other competitor (me) Jim Richardson finished 7th. Next race 29th May in Launceston - Bring it on!

Wednesday 12th May.

Picture
Conditions are looking good for this weeks paddle / training session. The tide will be high so space may be cramped in Caswell so we will start out from Langland by the Brasserie so see you there.!
Please pass this on to all your mates and buddies so they aren't left on their lonesome down Caswell.

Wednesday 5th May

Picture
Weather and winds look jolly nice for this weeks coastal tour. Depending on how things look on the water we will try to get in a little paddle technique training and with the race season approaching perhaps a few race style, beach and water starts. Plus, for the super enthusiastic Rich Morton will be offering an interval training routine to make sure everyone gets a good workout. Those wishing to take a gentle cruise and say hello to the seals will be equally welcome plus any beginners looking to have a bash - come on down.
Rumour has it that there may be a little wave too - so watch this space and I believe there will be some new boards to demo - as soon as I know which ones I'll let you know.

Wednesday April 28th

Hi All

Eyball report 8.15am Wednesday. Surf is coming in between 2-3 ft pretty clean and easily paddleboard get out able. With the wind disappearing to next to nothing later today we should have a classic session!

For the rest of the day we will be watching the windcharts and assessing the hightide lumpiness of Caswell Bay. All being well we'll take a shorter paddle around a slightly wavy bay and follow up with a surfing expression session in the bay possibly over on Redcliffe depending on crowds and conditions.

If it looks too challenging we will meet in Caswell and then zoom over the hill to take a scenic cruise down Swansea Bay from Verdi's cafe.. watch this space. Any thoughts or opinions - let me know.
Jim. 07834 775 863

After the last two meetings we could do with some photographic documentation - if you have a mate who loves to take pictures or you would like to volunteer, please come on down on Wednesday night take a few shots and have your pics proudly posted.

Try the Laird Surftech Coast Runner!!

This Wednesday - Down at Caswell at 7pm come on down and try out the 14ft Laird Coastal Runner the very same board that Guts took to Ilfracombe at the weekend. It's like the SUP equivalent of the Gypsy Moth or The Spirit of St Louie! See blog for slightly more details

Gower Paddle Surf Club Meeting Wednesday April 21st

Picture
After a very successful first meeting and with a favorable forecast for this Wednesday. - Lets do it again. Last week we had 12 paddle boards on the water and hopefully we should improve on that this week

The plan is to have  a gentle group paddle, slip into groups to take it as hard or as easy as you like and then play some paddle games (Last week we did short relay races and buoy turning drills) and generally lark about on the beautiful waters of Caswell Bay, Brandy Cove and Pwll Ddu.

We are hoping that we may have some of the latest boards available for club members to demo too.
Which ones? - still subject to confirmation - watch this space.

Also - Respect is Due - Gower Paddlers Adam England and Chris Griffiths  today completed the awesome task of Stand Up Paddling the Bristol Channel (Port Eynon, Gower to Ilfracombe, Devon) in an incredible time of 5hrs 45minutes! Whoo Hoo!
